Before we know it, we will be complaining about those pesky mosquitoes showing up making our outside activities a not so enjoyable time. While chemicals can give some relief to kill adult mosquitoes, the sprays last as long as the residual is active. There are options to plant strategic plants to help deter mosquitoes. While, it is not a guaranteed outcome, it’s worth a try to have some natural options and make your patio a little prettier while you’re at it!

Citronella
By far one of the most popular plants that can repel mosquitoes and other insects. This lemony scented geranium gives off a strong aroma that can be very effective. Plant citronella in the ground or in pots around areas that you frequently are in your yard.

Allium
This very popular perennial is not only a good repellent for mosquitoes but is also a beautiful plant to have in your yard. The onion scent of allium helps deter pests in your yard, and the purple circular flowers put on quite a show.

Lavender
Although the scent of lavender is primarily a desired scent for us, apparently mosquitoes do not find it near as desirable. Lavender is considered an annual here in northeastern South Dakota but makes a great patio planter addition!
Marigold
The tried and true marigold is a favorite for gardeners. The yellow, orange, gold and sometimes red hued flowers are a great addition to your patio, vegetable garden or anywhere in your yard. Mosquitoes as well as many other insects are not fond of the strong scent of marigolds.
