Ahhh… summer is here and your garden should be hitting its stride as your flowers start to flourish. The right amount of water and sunshine will keep them looking great all season long.
Lawn
- To prevent lawn fungus from spreading, we recommend applying F-Stop which protects your lawn and keeps it healthy.
- It’s also time to start applying Kill a Grub II. This product needs watered into the soil profile to be effective.
Garden
- Water your plants regularly. They will need more water as the temperatures increase and as they start to flower and produce fruit.
- Apply fungicides early before you see evidence of diseases. We recommend using Broad Spectrum Fungicideand Copper Fungicide.
- Fertilize your plants again between now and early July. Espoma Garden Food is a great choice for long lasting fertilizer.
Perennials
- Deadhead any plants that have finished flowering to promote more blooms if they are a rebloomer.
- Water plants on a regular basis, especially if there is little rain.
Trees and Shrubs
- Lilacs and other early spring bloomers should be trimmed now and completed before the 4thof July. Trimming after that point will take the flower buds off for next year resulting in no flowers for the year.
- Water all trees and shrubs if we have dry conditions, as lack of water will decrease their vigor for the next year. Slow, deep watering is best to get moisture deep into the profile.
- Mulch your plants to keep the roots cool. Hydrangeas and Clematis will especially benefit from this.
Remember to never apply pesticide or fertilizer when the temperature is high, as it can damage plants that are desired.
